Connection Problems with Mail Client

Troubleshooting problems connecting to POPFile's POP3 Proxy can be difficult as there are many reasons why you could fail to connect, ranging from other proxies and virus scanners to firewalls.

Although every person's setup will be different, it's generally a good idea to start with the basics and eliminate the obvious issues in a methodical manner. Try stepping thru each of the following to identify the problem on your system:

Corpus Corruption

Of course, there should be no possibility of corruption and we are trying to do what ever we can to prevent it.

What Causes Corruption?

Corpus corruption may be caused by killing (terminating) the POPFile program abnormally as this may leave the corpus structure on disk in an incomplete state. This can happen when your computer is turned off or restarted without shutting down.

This applies to POPFile 0.20.x only. It may be be helpful if you are having trouble upgrading from 0.20.x. The problems described no longer affect the current version of POPFile.

POPFile's corpus is stored in BerkeleyDB table files, one table.db file for each bucket that comprises the corpus. Under certain conditions, it is possible for a table.db file to become corrupt, e.g., system crashes or forcefully killing POPFile before critical table information was written…

Why doesn't POPFile remove messages from the server?

POPFile doesn't delete messages by itself, that is the job of your email client. POPFile is only a proxy that receives commands from your email client and passes them on to the mail server.

Verify that your mail client is correctly set up: is it set to delete messages on the server after retrieval? Is it set to download all or just unread mail? You could also check POPFile's logfile and see what happens when your client issues the delete…

1. Currently the most likely problem is the Windows trayicon as explained in the release notes of POPFile version 0.22. With certain setups if you attempt to view the trayicon's tooltip or hover your cursor over it while checking or downloading mail POPFile may freeze. It has also been known to cause unusual errors and freezes even if you don't interact with the trayicon. The exact cause is still unknown but it appears related to some video drivers.
